My file did not get smaller

Sometimes the result list says Already small. Kept the original. It means the file would not have got at least a little smaller, so the tool kept your original rather than give you a file that is no better.

What to try

  • Resize first. Fewer pixels mean a much smaller file. Use Resize, then compress.
  • Convert a photo saved as PNG. A PNG that is really a photo has millions of slightly different colors and little to trim. Converting it to WebP or JPG saves far more. See Convert images between formats.
  • Use the original. A JPG that was already compressed many times has little left to remove.
  • Try WebP or AVIF for a website. They store photos in less space than JPG.

If a resize says the same

Already smaller than that. Kept the original size. means Never enlarge is on and your picture is already smaller than the size you asked for. That is intended.

Good to know

There is no target file size setting. If a form needs a file under a certain size, resize it down in steps and compress until it fits.
