Import clients from a CSV file

Updated
Reading time
1 min
  1. Prepare your file. In a spreadsheet, make one row per client with these column headings in the first row: name, email, phone, address and, if you like, company. Save it as a CSV file.
  2. Open Clients. Click Import CSV.
  3. Choose your file. Sanil CRM reads it and shows what it found in the Import contacts window.
  4. Confirm. Click to import. The button says Importing… until it is done, and the new clients appear in your list.

The rules

  • Headings: capital letters and spaces around them do not matter, but the names must match. If a required column is missing you see “CSV is missing required column(s)” with its name.
  • Required values: a row needs a name and an email. A row without either is skipped.
  • One email per client. Each client’s email must be different within your business. A row whose email is already in your list fails instead of being added again.
  • Company: the company column is optional.
  • If the file has no usable rows you see “No contacts found in that CSV.”
  • When it finishes, you see how many were imported and how many failed, for example “3 imported, 1 failed”.

A sample

name,email,phone,address,company
John Doe,[email protected],555-0101,123 Main St,Acme Inc
Jane Smith,[email protected],555-0102,456 Oak Ave,Globex Corp
Note

Importing the same file twice does not create copies. The second time, rows whose email is already in your list fail and are not added.
