Compress images by format
Compress works on JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF and SVG. Add your files as described in Compress your first image. The result keeps the same format as the original.
There is no quality slider. Each image is re-encoded at the lowest quality that still looks the same as the original, and location and camera data are removed.
What to expect
| Format | Typical result |
|---|---|
| JPG | Photos often shrink by half or more. |
| PNG | Screenshots, logos and graphics shrink well, and transparency is kept. A photo saved as PNG stays large. |
| WebP | Smaller savings, because WebP is already efficient. Files exported quickly can still shrink. |
| AVIF | Smaller savings too. AVIF is slow to encode, so big photos take longer, especially on a phone. |
| GIF | The animation is kept. |
| SVG | Comments, editor metadata and unused definitions are stripped, and the drawing stays the same. |
Tips
- Start from the original, not a copy that was already compressed several times. Repeated compression can show faint blocky patches in JPGs.
- A PNG that is really a photo is better converted to WebP or JPG. See Convert images between formats.
- For the smallest file at a particular size, use Resize first.
- There is no target file size setting.
