Move an old Preeti document to Unicode

This tutorial moves an old document, such as a Word file written in Preeti, into a new document that anyone can open. Keep the original file untouched until you have checked the result.

What you need

  • The original document, opened in the program that can display Preeti.
  • A new, empty document in the program you want to use from now on.

Convert it

  1. Copy one section. Select a few paragraphs or a page of the old document and copy them. Working in sections makes each result easy to check.
  2. Paste and convert. Open the converter, paste into the Preeti pane and click Convert.
  3. Copy the Unicode text. Click Copy above the right pane.
  4. Paste into the new document. Choose a Unicode Nepali font for it, such as Mangal or Noto Sans Devanagari. Without one, the letters may show as boxes.
  5. Repeat for each section. Then read the whole document through once.

Check these before you finish

  • English words and numbers. The converter changes every letter it is given, including English. Convert only the Preeti parts and type the English parts back in. See English text turns into Nepali letters.
  • Headings and lists. Formatting such as bold or bullets is not carried over, so apply it again in the new document.
  • Special letters. Look at conjunct letters and punctuation. If something is missing, see The converted text looks wrong.
